Soo Line Steam from the Collection of Harold Vollrath

Soo Line O-20 Northern 5001 at Shoreham. Photo taken May 1948. The four O-20 Northerns of 1939 were Soo Line’s only Lima-built steam power, providing quick freight service between Chicago (Schiller Park) and Minneapolis (Shoreham), and they were also the largest steam locomotives obtained by the Soo Line. One almost wonders what would have happened to Soo steam power development if World War II and dieselization had not occurred. For another view, also at Shoreham (1954), click here.
