Contemporary Steam Locomotives

In the summer of 2002, Union Pacific 3985--a Challenger (4-6-6-4) type locomotive--took to former Chicago and North Western RR rails across the Midwest, as part of a Union Pacific publicity tour. Among the stops was South St. Paul, MN, because the UP has a yard in nearby St. Paul. There was no shortage of people on hand to view the 3985 this evening--indeed, just getting a clear shot proved difficult! The 3985 is the largest operating steam locomotive today, and provides a most impressive sight in person. To imagine that the UP and several other railroads once ran locomotives like this every day seems almost unimaginable to a young guy like me, but indeed that did happen.
