Contemporary Steam Locomotives

Another view of the 1003 at Milton,WI in September 2000. This photo illustrates one of the problems of operating a steam locomotive today--the lack of service facilities! Since most railroads tore down their coal docks and water towers at the end of steam (including the Soo), finding facilities today can prove difficult. On this occasion, the local fire department helped refill the tender with water; the 1003 had more than enough coal loaded at the start of the trip and so did not have to take on more.
