Contemporary Steam Locomotives

One of the largest operating steam locomotives today is Milwaukee Road 261. This queen of the rails, a 4-8-4 Northern type, calls Minneapolis, MN home, though she has taken excursions across the United States. Incidentally, this is the steam locomotive I have seen and photographed most. Here, the 261 is seen at her home base in north-central Minneapolis, on a beautiful April 2002 morning, prior to departing for Duluth, MN with a special excursion over BNSF.
