Soo Line Steam Locomotives
Among the largest Soo Line steam locomotives were the N-20
Mountains (4-8-2s). These versatile locomotives were most often used for
heavy freights, but they could also see service on passenger trains like
the popular summertime Mountaineer to western Canada. The Soo Mountains
were built in three lots, with the last three (4018-4020) being erected
by the Soo in their own Shoreham Shops at the start of the Great Depression.
Here Mountain 4009 is seen at the same Shoreham Shops in 1948, with a tender
full of coal. Soon the 4009 will be doubtless leading a heavy freight consist,
most likely to Chicago.
