Soo Line Steam Locomotives

Another Soo Line H-23 Pacific, the 2720, is seen at the Shoreham Yards in Minneapolis, freshly serviced and ready to go. Note that the 2720 has a different tender from the 2718 (pictured elsewhere). This was probably to increase capacity and therefore the distance the engine could travel between service stops. Shoreham served as the main shops of the Soo Line for most of the railroad's existence. In the late 1980s, after the Milwaukee Road purchase, the Shoreham Yards were torn up and the facility was converted to an intermodal yard. Canadian Pacific now does most locomotive work at their own shops in Canada, with light repairs done at St. Paul, MN. But once upon a time, it was the heart of a great railroad.
