Diesel Locomotives, 1991-2000

Many rare and unusual locomotives were acquired by the Soo in the years following the Milwaukee Road merger. Among the new used locomotives acquired were two GP39-2s from Kennecott Copper Company of Utah. Spotting features include fuel tanks with higher-than-normal bottoms, required due to the high clearances in one of Kennecott's mines. While they have been known to stray into all kinds of service, I have observed them mostly in the Twin Cities. The 4598 is mated with two other inherited Milwaukee units at Red Wing, MN on January 16, 1993.
