Diesel Locomotives, 1986-1990
Another place the Soo Line came to serve after the Milwaukee
Road merger was Portage, Wisconsin. (Actually the old Wisconsin Central,
which the "old" Soo leased, accessed Portage on a branch line,
but this time it was on the main). Portage featured a small yard and was
a regular stop for Amtrak as well. In fact, the Soo's Chicago-St. Paul line
was the only Amtrak service on the road; there was none from 1971 (Amtrak's
start) to 1986 (the merger). Here SD40-2 6603 and SD40 748 run light through
the yard in November 1986.
