Diesel Locomotives, 1986-1990
Following the Milwaukee Road merger, the Soo Line had a lot
more tonnage to move, and thus a lot more trains. Unfortunately, because
a lot of the Milwaukee's motive power was worn out, the Soo couldn't always
rely on it, and so they hit the used locomotive market in a big way to fill
in the gaps. Here Soo Line SD40A 6406 leads a freight past Dayton's Bluff
in St. Paul on July 28, 1990. The unit was originally Illinois Central Gulf
# 6019, and was acquired from Helm Leasing. These were the only locomotives,
other than the SD60Ms, to have the headlight in the nose.
