Railroad Depot Photos
This view of the Thief River Falls depot shows another of
its' attractions, display steam locomotive 1024, a 2-8-2 Mikado. The 1024
was acquired from the Monon (Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville) during
World War II to help with a motive-power shortage (new locomotive production
was cut during the war to help with the production of military supplies).
The locomotive was also shown leading a passenger train in the painting
Night Departure from Thief River Falls by railroad artist Larry Fisher.
A print of this painting hangs in my living room, providing a beautiful
centerpiece. The depot is located along U.S. Highway 59, just across the
Red Lake River bridge and railroad tracks, in Thief River Falls.
